In IFS therapy, we honor the multiplicity of personality parts within us. Doing so often creates compassionate space and understanding for what can seem like some of the most confusing or demoralizing emotional states, ways we attempt to control others or our environment, or ways we act out in knee-jerk reactivity.

New to parts work? Not sure when you are gripped by a "part" versus your more calm, confident, centered Self?
There are some telltale signs that a part has "taken over." Spotting these while in them, creates a massive shift in awareness.
Here are some of the signs via questions you can ask yourself:

Am I spacious and calm or over-energized or under-energized?
Can I think clearly?
Do I have a relaxed tone or an edge? (aggressive, whine, condescension, irritation, frustration...)
Is my body language relaxed? Intense and closing in on someone else? Muscles in the face an neck tense or relaxed? Am I moving around a lot?
Do I notice how things are landing on the other person? Does it matter to me? Have we lost a relational connection?
Is my body tense or tight? Easeful? can I feel my body? Is my heart open or closed right now?
Am I reaching for dopamine hits, distractions, food, spending?
This is a starting point. The awareness of being "blended with a part" offers a doorway into deeper self-awareness and curiosity. Some of our most common parts blend with us in an effort to protect us from something that feels "bad."
This is why I love offering IFS therapy to clients. It is a relatively quick and loving way for someone to create far more space inside of themselves and not only heal, but take self-responsibility for their inner and outer lives!
